Even though I've been a fan of blogger for years, I've just come to appreciate the simplicity of tumblr. Therefore there will be no more updates to this blog. Instead, I created a little place for myself at tumblr, and will start posting there instead, hoping that tumblr's easier, faster, simpler way of making posts of any kind will encourage me to be more active. There are so many things, links, photos, tips and other that I'd like to share, but just the thought of logging in to a blogger account that has been significantly slow for the last couple of months, has made it more painful than fun, and the inspiration to share has faded before I even got a draft post made.

Waaaay too long time! (Almost 4 months, *woooooohw*!!!)

As I see at least a few of you haven't given up on me altogether, I offer my deepest apologies for my absence! Summer was busy, autumn has been even busier and I bet winter won't be less busy... Well, I'll just try not to be so freaking lazy about this blog even though I'm busy!

I've been doing some shopping, although not perhaps as much as I would have liked to. Lack of time and - surprise, surprise considering the financial situation in the world - funds has both played their parts in this. I'll see if I manage to arrange some kind of photoshoot tomorrow, I've got a few real nice things to show off (mainly shoes - can somebody tell me why I'm such a sucker for shoes?!?). ;)

However, what really got me inspired enough to finally pull myself together and write this blog post was the fact that I received the most wonderful thing in the mail today! Here's the first hint:

I felt like a little girl unpacking the beautiful and carefully wrapped little package (indeed packed with care, by Hannah at WKD - thank you!); the sort of shimmering anticipation not at all disturbed by the fact that I knew very well what was to expect.

And finally, in all its glory, the Bésame Your Perfect Red lipstick set (with 1.5g samples of six - Besame Red, Red Hot Red, Red Velvet, Cherry Red, Merlot and Carmine - Classic Lipsticks) lay on my desk. Wow!

Eager to try them out, yet eager not to use them up too quickly, I've decided to try only one a day until I've tried them all, then we'll see. I hope I'll find a definitive favorite, because I have a feeling I won't really have the money to order more than one ordinary sized lipstick, and I'd hate not to feel convinced I made the right choice.

Well, as soon as the small cans had warmed up enough to be used (it's not that warm anymore here; only 7 degrees celsius when I got home from work and picked the package up from the mailbox outdoors), I randomly picked one, and it turned out to be the Red Velvet shade.

It was very easy to apply with the brush that came along, and as it is a pigmented lipstick I needed very little to get full cover (which means the samples are gonna last for a while, yay!!!). I love the matte finish; I've never really liked the glossy kinds of lipsticks, not even before I got into vintage style more actively. Very nice formula, I like the ones that are on a bit dry-ish (just make sure to use some lipbalm a while before applying the lipstick if you have dry lips; I forgot about that this time because I was so eager to get it on ;) ).

It had a bit more of a dark pink undertone than I had expected, but I think that might just be because of my natural lip color. And it doesn't hurt at all. Nice color both for everyday use and a night out, I'd say.

Edit, Nov. 6: Ok, so I didn't manage to stay on schedule with the trying-out-the-lovely-lipsticks-thing, and also realized that it would be a mistake to shoot the photos of the shades in different days, as the daylight wouldn't be exactly the same. I'll have to put them all on the same day and take the photos. Duh. That's why I'll be back later with a review of all the six shades, as soon as I find the time to focus on that project! ;)

This is a super easy tutorial posted today by the lovely Casey. I can't wait to try it, it looks so simple to make and the result is really cute!

And then some icehockey. Anyone with the slightest interest have probably noticed that Finland happened to win the World Championships. :) I've not been very interested before, really, but I've watched the games when we've either had guests or been guests ourselves, enjoying the company and feeling. However, this year (close to the finals, I believe it was just before the semi finals) I've had somewhat of a revelation; not only did this WC turn me into a Finn ;) but I also find myself reading the hockey news on the news sites. And enjoying it! I don't know where this is gonna end - yet another interest/hobby in my life is the last thing I need as I've already got so much trouble finding time for all in existence! Time will tell. In the meantime, I'll enjoy following what happens to my newfound favorite - Jarkko Immonen, the super talented Finnish "goal king".

I bought these (through eBay) a while ago and now that spring is here to stay - why, even summer is within eyesight, it seems! - I might feel more like using them. I must admit I'm very bad at using earrings even though I own at least 20 pairs or so (clip-ons and screw fastening only, I'm one of those rare weirdos who actually never pierced my ears). I really must try to improve - what good do they do tucked away in my jewelry case?

This is such an adorable handbag that arrived in the mail today (or, rather, yesterday if one is to be picky. But because of the size I had to pick it up from the post office today). It really shouts out: Summer!!! And I need summer now. I bought it from Little Rascal and according to a stamp on the parcel it had taken a little trip to Thailand before it finally decided to end up with me as planned...

I love the bamboo handles, and look at the beautiful flowers!

Remembering the Titanic...

I'm not sure if I've mentioned it here on this blog before, but I've been fascinated by the tragic history of the Titanic and her passengers for many years, although as with almost everything in my life, I have a period of almost fanatic interest and then it kind of fades away when the everyday life and other interests claim their part of my time. Some years ago I was a co-writer at a site about the Titanic, taking care mostly of passenger biographies and the ship itself (blueprints, interior and exterior photographs and descriptions etc.)

If you would have waken me up in the middle of the night during my most intense Titanic "period" and asked me to describe the boat deck, I could have done that, from the 2nd class entrance to the bridge. No problem. Detailed information about the captain's quarters? No problem. Technical information about the lighting and water on board? No problem. Information about the different kind of fresh food and even flowers that was stored on G deck? No problem. (Do I need to add; nowadays, I don't recall even half of the knowledge I used to have...)

Even though I'm not active as a writer on the Titanic site anymore, I still carry with me that fascination and interest for anything Titanic related. I do watch the James Cameron movie from time to time, and while I have to admit I don't care much about the love story, I lose myself in the marvelous replica of the ship they made for the movie. And the period clothing, not to forget.

Well, as it is April 15th, and the ship went down very early in the morning (having hit the iceberg shortly before midnight April 14th), I suddenly caught a spark of my old burning interest and therefore had to write this post. Just as a remembrance.

The Flu and The Notebook :)

Don't you too hate having the flu? I've been super tired for two weeks or so, not to mention the running nose, the cough that shifts between getting better and worse all the time, headaches and muscle soreness.

I've spent a lot of time in bed, or in front of our fireplace, reading. Or I've been resting on the couch watching tv and some movies. Have you seen The Notebook? Sweetest thing I've seen in a long time! I love Allies clothes (surprise surprise, since I hardly buy any clothes or accessories that aren't 40's or 50's originals or style)!! I've also watched contemporary movies (that, too, is not something I do regularly); more exactly the Bourne trilogy starring Matt Damon. Good movies, and I kinda discovered him; I've never been a fan before but now I do start to see his qualities. Not to mention he's got the kind of look that just improves with age. :)

Now I'll soon cuddle up in front of the fireplace again, I think. But what to read now that all my 12 Plum novels (I'm not-so-patiently-waiting for the following to come in Swedish and paperback format before I buy them) are back on the bookshelf? Any suggestions?

Oh, and the photograph on top is probably from the late 40's or early 50's and the lady is my great grandfather's housekeeper Lilly.

Got these light pink gloves from a seller at eBay a while ago. I have to admit, I'm the type who thinks it looks fabulous when someone is wearing gloves, but when I try to myself, I feel somewhat uncomfortable, like I was on my way to a costume party or so. (Unless it's freezing cold outside, and gloves has be worn for that reason, of course, but that's another thing.)

I hope I'll be a little braver this spring, or these pretties will stay unseen and unadmired in my drawer. And that would be a shame, wouldn't it?!

Dancing Inspiration

I'm really not good at dancing, I've never been, and I very rarely dance in public (meaning: when other people are present. Actually performing in front of others are about as likely to happen as me shaving off all my hair). However, while doing Zumba for exercise (gotta prevent all those lost kilos from coming back) I've actually improved a bit. While Zumba is not dancing, it's exercise, it has made me aware of my own body and capable of controlling it much more than before. I have actually started to consider taking classes (or at least buy some dvd's), because I would love love love to be able to dance swing dances like balboa and lindy hop as well as jive and the Bop.

This post over at the blog the Rockabilly Socialite is so inspiring for me! Let's see if I get those feet dancing when spring progresses. :)

... commercial/informative movie from 1962! Miriam wrote about it over at her blog Kafferepet a while ago and I just have to mention it here, it's such a joy watching it. It's Swedish and 22 (!) minutes long and is about Trollhättan icecream. Even if you don't speak Swedish you'll enjoy the beautiful clothes, styles, cars and environments I'm sure makes it worthwhile to take a look at it.

These red high heel shoes with white polka dots are not vintage, but vintage style, and even they are a bit too large at the moment (easily fixed; I just have to make an additional hole in the strap) I so look forward to be using them this summer! At UK eBay they cost me about a 3rd or even 4th of the price a similar pair of shoes would cost me here in Finland...

Pink shell shaped lucite bead necklace, 1950's.

I've been in a pink mood lately; a few days ago I bought a pink metal baking-tin (the practical kind, with sides that may be detached from bottom once the cake is done). And I'm not even really the baking (or cooking, for that matter) type of gal, although I am trying to improve. Now that we've got a dishwasher and I don't have to hand wash all the bowls, spoons, plastic measures etc. it's definitely more tempting to try new recipes.

This quite heavy light blue 1950's necklace I got for only 20 SEK (about $3), it's in very good condition and immediately became a favorite of mine. I've got just the shoes to match it with as soon as it gets warm enough to use wedges. :)

Wow, and again it has been way too long since last time... I've had lots going on and we've also struggled with some frozen water pipes at home, due to this everlasting cold. I can't remember a winter that has been this cold for such a long time with only 1 or 2 shorter periods of warmer weather. Right now it feels almost like summer - only -2,3 degrees Celsius compared to the between -20 and -28 that we have had to get used to! Well, our pipes are fixed and lets hope spring is here soon!!

I have done some shopping while being so very not blogging... So last weekend I took the camera and started to document my finds so I can show off a little here. :) They come from flea markets, Swedish site Tradera and also eBay.

First out is a beautiful green lucite necklace that consists of thin "discs". According to the seller on eBay it's from the 1950's.

I'll try not to wait more than three months to post next time! ;)

By the evening tonight we'll be eating our first meal (which will be home delivered pizza, I believe...) in the new house. Yay!!!

Unfortunately this also means that I will be losing my internet connection and will be offline until our new one start working. That in turn means that in the two-three weeks it will take, I'll get lots of things done at home because I'm not distracted by all the fun online, so it's not just a bad thing actually! :)

Moving...

So it has happened. We're moving. Our row house apartment got sold within a week! We've since then found a house we really like and we're signing the purchase contract this Wednesday. I've been packing for a few weeks already, and will continue to do so for a while. We get the keys to the house October 15th and will still have our apartment until to the 31st so we've actually got plenty of time to pursue the actual moving as well as the final cleaning. But, time flies so quickly, and I know that even though it seems we've still got a month to pack and prepare, that month will be gone in no-time. So I probably won't be posting much here for a while (don't know yet when we'll get internet connection to the new house, it might take some time to get that arranged).

Anyway, I just wanted to post a little update regarding my personal circumstances. I'll let you know when we're done moving. And since we're upgrading (more rooms, larger living area) I'll get my own permanent sewing-and-crafting-place (part of the guest room) instead of having to drag the sewing machine and any crafting supplies back and forth to the living room table when I want to make something. I REALLY look forward to be able to have the sewing machine available at all times, hoping to improve my sewing skills (as I've got a bunch of great 40's and 50's patterns waiting for me to be skilled enough to handle them...)!!!

... has the summer really almost passed by without me writing a single post here? Well, I honestly don't know where time disappeared, I just know that now I've been back working for two full weeks and I find myself rather mystified about where my vacation time did go...

Anyway, I haven't done many vintage finds during the summer, mostly because I've been sitting in a car driving around Europe (and not stopping at any second hand shops, too bad...), seeing absolutely stunning scenery while going through southern Germany, then Austria, Slovenia, Italy and Switzerland before turning back home. I've had an amazing time, no doubt about it, but the only thing vintage I did find during the summer was a few items (two pair of 1940's shoes, a 1950's top and a 1960's or so handbag) I've won at Swedish auction site Tradera, waiting at me back home in Sweden (at my parents' house) and I also found a few 1940's magazines in a thrift store there. That's pretty much it. But I won't complain - during our European road trip I've seen so much I never really thought I'd see in person. :)

Now we've got some diffuse plans of moving - selling the row-house that we now live in and buy a house of or "really own", preferably out in the countryside. I'm the type who don't really like to have neighbors too close. :) I'll probably be rather occupied packing anything unnecessary beforehand so we won't have to pack our whole household the minute we get it sold. I'll try to get some picture of those 1940's shoes posted soon anyway. :)

I know, I'm have so not been writing any blog posts lately. I've been busy doing other things during the precious little spare time I've got. And I've been trying to get some sewing done, but the fact that I'm probably having the most non-cooperative body measurements on the planet combined with my inability to start with real simple projects like skirts (since I'm really not that experienced as a seamstress yet) and instead throwing myself heedlessly into blouse projects - I delude myself into thinking they are easy and end up frustrated and convinced that I'll never be able to make those cute 50's blouses I'd want to. I really wanted to get some summer outfits made but I'm not sure I'll be able to if I'm progressing - or rather un-progressing - at this pace.

I think I'll have to, sooner or later, get someone to help me create a personalized dummy so I at least can try to fix my mistakes while the garment hangs on it instead of twisting and twirling around myself when it hangs on me...

Anyway, summer's up, and that's why I chose to blog this photo from my Flickr photostream (it's actually taken in April last year, but I think it has a very distinct summer feeling)...

I agree with what fellow vintage ladies have been writing about this collection - and with a few exceptions I just don't see the vintage inspiration. Nonetheless, since I today went to a shopping center where there is a KappAhl store, I figured I'd go and check it out. I was neither disappointed nor pleasantly surprised, it was pretty much what I had expected.

This red dress with white dots I might have considered buying, but not at that price (€ 49,95 - 499 SEK)!

These sunglasses, though, I actually did find cute enough to buy. :) (€ 12,95 - 129 SEK)

... shoes are going to be mine!

And that's thanks to my helpful, generous mother back in Sweden. Skopunkten only deliver within Sweden, you see, so she willingly ordered the shoes and they'll wait for me next time I go there to visit. (Along with a few vintage Tradera finds that she also has helped me with, won't it be super fun for me next time I go "home home" - not only I get to see all my family but also bringing goodies with me back home to Finland?!)

There are so many shoes I'd want (I could easily order about 10 pairs or so from Skopunkten, and that's just one store/seller) - I do have a (very) soft spot for shoes in general and high heels in particular... :)

Recent eBay Pattern Finds: Style Print 1397 and Weldons 2395

These two gorgeous patterns arrived in my mailbox a few days ago, somewhat torn and tarnished by age, but nonetheless so sweet!

I believe the Style pattern to be from the 1960's and the Weldons one from the 1940's, and I do have some plans for them although I'm not sure exactly when I'll find the time to carry them out. Hopefully before summer, though, since my plans are to transform them into sundresses. :)

To be sewn: Part 1 - 50's blouse

I admit buying vintage sewing patterns faster than I will ever manage to sew anything from them (although that doesn't actually make up a very large number since I'm always so tired in the weekday evenings when coming home from work, that I won't ever get any sewing done during the weeks and thus I don't have to buy that many patterns to be able to put them i stacks that I would need 5-day weekends and 2-day working weeks to get through) but I can't seem to resist them...

This sweet, simple blouse is in the making right now. Or rather, I'm working on a mock-up made from an old bed sheet. Why? Well, I've simply never ever sewn a blouse before and I don't trust my very butterfingered tries to fit the pattern pieces (not the originals, I've traced them!) while twisting and bending in front of the mirror - I sadly do not own a tailor's dummy. I'm planning to do the long sleeved style (A) since I love any sleeve that even remotely resembles bishop sleeves. :)

This is a photograph from an album that belonged to my maternal grandmother. It is most likely taken in 1932, and the Swedish magazine the girl is reading is called "Tidsfördrif" which should translate into "pastime", I believe.

It's a bit before "my time", actually, as I'm more into 40's through early 60's, but I kinda like this picture so much that I just had to post it here. My grandmother's albums contain lots and lots of small sized photographs from the 1920's and 1930's, and I'll pick out some of them and post them here.

So sweet 1940's apron sewing pattern

This is a darling I recently bought from a seller on the Swedish auction site Tradera (part of eBay). The manufacturer is "Stil" and the only thing that resembles a pattern number of any kind is a simple "F.2." (there is no envelope for this pattern). The pattern pieces are fragile but fully useable. Although the pocket piece is unfortunately missing, I imagine it wouldn't be too difficult to re-create it - so now I'll just have to find the perfect fabric for it! :)

Free Victorian Style Place Cards for Dinner Parties

This was originally a much more decorated card from a late 1800's scrap album; I removed most of the ivy to make room for names to be added. Print it on cardboard, cut around the ivy border but leave the sides so the card will stick together, then fold it and place it next to the plate at the table.

I give you both a version with a white back side, so you can cut it out along the line of ivy on the top if you wish to. If that's too much job for you (no doubt it would be rather time consuming tracing the ivy border), I've also uploaded a tan colored version so you can cut it in a half circle shape (see the illustration with the dotted line).

Would fit perfectly if you're planning on decorating the laying of the table with fresh ivy garlands!

Oh my, I'm so excited about getting started on this blog!

So, for today's treat; it's not my original idea so I will not take any credit whatsoever for it; the one who inspired me to create these labels was Cathe over at the fabulous blog Just Something I Made (direct link to her label blog post -> click here). Go ahead, click on the sheet of your choice, save it to your computer, print and cut it, roll those fabric left-overs to tidy rolls, write the width and length on the label, then wrap and tape it! :)

Miss Meetah herself...

... is actually not a "miss" but a "mrs", however somehow "Mrs Meetah" isn't really as striking as the missy thing, right? :)

So this is the chitchat blog of a girl (no, at 30 I'm not yet an adult!) who really can't make up her mind. I'm swaying between the bustles of the 1880's, the belle epoch of the turn of the century, the mid- and late 40's swing and Hollywood glamour, the 50's rock'n'roll and a little 60's beehives... I simply cannot decide permanently upon one of them.

Perhaps it's just for the best that I was born exactly when I was. Now I can choose freely which era to get inspired by - and I do get inspired, by them all; one at a time or sometimes several simultaneously.

And besides - where would I be without my digital camera, not to mention my computer ? ;) I like photography and to play around with both my photographs and vintage graphics on my PC. Occasionally I do digital scrapbooking, mostly pages related in one way or another to my genealogical research.

I also fancy sewing and crafting, although both of them most of the time get sadly neglected, simply because I get stuck in front of the computer loosing myself in all the gorgeous pictures and ideas that I seem to constantly stumble upon while surfing the net.

Oh, and i looooove shoes with high heels... ;)
